Celebrating National Canned Food Month with Peach Smoothie

Since it is the National Canned Food Month, I am celebrating it with Del Monte Canned Peaches by making a delicious smoothie. During the cold winter months, it is difficult to find fresh, economical fruit to include in our fruit and nutrient intake. Luckily, we can buy canned fresh fruits such as California peaches that have vitamins our body needs.
In celebration of National Canned Food Month this February, the California Cling Peach Board commissioned did a survey that revealed some shocking misconceptions about canned peaches. Almost two thirds of Canadians think that the canning process adversely affects the nutritional content of the peaches. However, according to a study by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, canned peaches are higher in antioxidants and Vitamin A and are nearly four times higher in Vitamin C and 10 times higher in folate than fresh peaches. California cling peaches are picked and packed usually within 24 hours, ensuring they retain their appearance, texture, flavour and nutritional content.
The online survey done between January 14th to 17th, 2014 on 1510 randomly selected Canadian adults aged 25-54 who are the primary or shared grocery shopper in their household reveals additional key findings about canned peach users:
  • 69% indicate that reducing the sugar content would likely encourage them to buy canned peaches more frequently than they currently do. California cling peaches do not contain added sugar. They are packed in water or their own light juice.
  • 69% say knowing the peaches came from Canada or the U.S. would likely encourage users to buy canned peaches more often.
  • 55% say convenience is what they prefer about canned peaches over fresh.
Not only are canned California cling peaches nutritious, but also delicious and versatile, which can be included in a number of recipes. Here is a recipe for a protein-packed peach smoothie courtesy of the California Cling Peach Board that is guaranteed to leave us feeling nourished and energized in the winter months.
1/2 cup cold Almond milk
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
8 slices canned California cling peaches
3 strawberries
1 tsp. honey
3 to 4 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in a blender and pour into a glass.

  6. The smoothie looks great but would love a non-dairy version using vanilla soy milk since 3 out of 4 of us in my home are allergic to dairy products. I like canned fruit. I think they taste very fresh (especially peaches, pears and pineapple) especially compared to frozen fruit that get mushy when they thaw.
